 About the Organization:
The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) was established in 2003 as a research center at the Economics Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since then, it has grown into a global network of researchers who use randomized evaluations to answer critical policy questions in the fight against poverty. J-PAL's mission is to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is based on scientific evidence.

About the Job:

J-PAL Africa is looking for a Senior Research Analyst to be located in SALDRU, in the UCT School of Economics. S/he will work with J-PAL Africa staff and affiliated professors in developing and administering field research, and coordinating J-PAL Africa’s capacity building activities. This is a full-time contract position for two years.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  •     Coordinating exploratory research and running randomized evaluations within South Africa;
  •     Engaging with postgraduate students, researchers, development practitioners, and policy makers to build their capacity in rigorous impact evaluation methods;
  •     Drafting research papers;
  •     Analyzing freshly collected field data and existing South African data sets using Stata;
  •     Writing grant proposals;
  •     Occasional international travel.

Qualifications:

  •     Honor’s degree (Master’s is a plus) in Economics, Social Sciences, or equivalent level degrees that include training in Statistics or Linear Algebra;
  •     At least 2 years of relevant work experience;
  •     Strong quantitative skills;
  •     Excellent organizational and professional communication skills, the ability to manage projects independently;
  •     Prior experience with programming in Stata, Matlab or R is preferred;
  •     Prior research assistance experience in the field is preferred;
  •     Proficiency in one of the official South African languages in addition to English (e.g., Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho) is a strong benefit.
