Job Purpose:
Provision of mechanical equipment maintenance, design and manufacturing services in support of the activities of the Engineering and Maintenance Department.


Key Performance Areas:


  • To ensure that service providers and support contracts are appropriately maintained:
  • Agree with customers on priorities
  • Manage and schedule own work to ensure that clients receive service within agreed time lines
  • Manage and schedule own work by liaising and alignment with other technicians who are using the same workshop equipment
  • Inspections of contractors’ work to ensure that all SLA’s are met appropriately
  • Ensure that all quotations received are in line with company policy and processes
  • Ensuring that a safe environment exists for all internal SABS employees and is appropriately maintained at all times
  • Ensure that safe work environment practices are maintained

Quotations and work estimates:

Plan and estimate work to be carried out for specific client tasks, including materials, time frames and related activities
Compile quotations based on priorities, work effort and material costs

Optimize own performance:

  • Provide technical support related to laboratory equipment and the activities of the department to colleagues and SABS laboratories
  • Participate as a productive team member
  • Manage own performance in order to meet departmental objectives
  • Value diversity and actively build business relationships
  • Ensuring that one is able to seek guidance and mentorship from more experienced team members where necessary
  • Evaluation of team member’s performance

Ensure that all maintenance requirements are met appropriately:
Fault finding
Maintenance: break down and planned maintenance
Design of components, parts and systems
Manufacture of components, parts and systems
Repair and refurbishment of broken equipment, parts and components

Qualifications and Experience:

B degree / National Diploma in a related discipline such as engineering etc.
Trade certificate as instrument maker, toolmaker or fitter and turner or millwright.
Valid driver’s license
3 years post qualification experience in a diverse mechanical maintenance / manufacturing environment
CNC programming in G-code
