Regional WASH Coordinator - Southern Africa

Pretoria, South Africa

Competitive Salary and Benefits

2-year contract

Despite significant economic growth across the region, Southern Africa continues to be caught in a deep and ongoing cycle of chronic poverty, whose roots lie in a number of complex issues.
And public health has a major role to play in addressing many of these issues. We now have an opportunity to increase the scale and breadth of our public health work and consequently make a much more significant impact on livelihoods throughout the region. As our new Regional WASH Coordinator, you will lead that drive.

The role

You will lead on both strategic thinking and innovation in respect of WASH programmes and policies for the region. Working in both humanitarian and development contexts, as well as in urban and rural settings, you'll support country programmes in developing and implementing plans and practices that help communities and national governments adapt to periodic shocks, but more importantly fit closely with livelihoods and food security programmes. Equally important you'll provide strategic analysis and direction, facilitating learning, analysing trends and providing targeted advice. You'll also be a source of technical advise on Wash related issues, co-ordinating with colleagues in other Oxfam affiliates.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone with a Master's degree (or equivalent) and technical experience in WASH. That should have given you experience of assessing and responding to both slow and fast onset emergencies, and of managing and advising teams from a distance. As you will need to work with partner organisations and other stakeholders in the region, you'll need to have a track record of being an effective influencer both inside and outside your home organisation. If you can add to that experience of designing and implementing programme strategies and of developing staff, you could be just what our work in Southern Africa needs.
