Objectives of the programme:
The programme aims to increase food security and climate resilience in East and Southern Africa through improved agriculture policy and practices. Specifically, the programme will enhance agricultural production and food security by adapting and scaling up good agricultural practices; which in turn will enable farmers to be more resilient to increasing climate variations. Increased climate resilience will be achieved through the use of low cost conservation and climate smart agriculture tools, techniques, and systems. Furthermore, the programme will work at the national, regional and global policy levels across Eastern and Southern Africa to improve policy on climate smart agriculture, maximize the potential for the most vulnerable in the region, and seek support from the global community to attract adaptation and mitigation finance.

Objectives of the role:

DAI is seeking applications from highly experienced experts for the role of Communications Advisor. The role of the Communications Advisor is to contribute to the transformation of African agriculture and climate resilience through the use of innovative communications technologies and bringing a strategic mindset to programme objectives. This may include through working with mass communication technologies such as cell phones, radio and TV or more targeted communications to and with senior policy makers and regional champions.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  •     Identify criteria for selection of innovative communications partners and interventions
  •     Manage innovative communications interventions in the region that contribute to the overall programme's objectives of climate smart agriculture and climate resilience.
  •     Develop a communications strategy that presents how to manage internal (website, keep staff up to date) and external communications (aim of playing a catalytic role to transform African agriculture to make it climate smart and households climate resilient).
  •     Implement innovative communications tools and programs to build knowledge and awareness of agriculture conservation and technologies (i.e. mobile, radio, etc.)
  •     Help inform regional and national policy directions to increase climate resilience; particularly linked to food security
  •     Develop p ress releases to local media; video/documentaries for television and/or distribution to senior government officials ; and media interviews arranged for senior government officials .
  •     Align communications strategies with the regional economic communities' priorities
  •     Monitor and communicate results
  •     Develop case studies and communications releases in plain English.
  •     Work closely with Team Leader, Policy Advisor, and other technical leads to develop targeted behaviour change strategies

Key Skills & Qualifications:
  •     Degree in media/communications and at least 5 years experience of working in media and communications
  •     Excellent written and spoken English. Plain English skills essential
  •     Expertise in new media, developing social platforms and incorporating communications technologies into development programmes
  •     Good team working skills
  •     Ability to work across a number of cultures and countries
  •     Ability to deliver high quality products under pressurised time schedules
  •     Experience working in communications in East and/or Southern African. Preferably, familiarity with climate smart agriculture and conservation agriculture.
  •     Demonstrated experience driving behaviour change initiatives
  •     Experience working with regional economic communities such as COMESA, SADC, and EAC an advantage.
  •     Ability to navigate politically complex relationships
  •     Strong strategic mindset
  •     Willingness to relocate within Eastern or Southern Africa.

Length of the project: 4 years
