JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for reviewing, interpreting and abstracting clinical information from inpatient, observation and surgical records for the purposes of reimbursement, research and compliance with regulatory requirements and other agencies utilizing established coding principles and protocols.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Identifies and codes outpatient surgery, observation and impatient records
Interprets clinical data to identify the appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes
Extracts pertinent information from clinical notes, operative records and various other types of reports
Clarifies discrepancies in documentation and coding
Ensures the accuracy and timeliness of required code assignments
Performs follow-up coding of medical records as a result of internal or external reviews
Releases appropriate information to people or agencies in accordance with established regulations
Processes and prepares business and government forms
Maintains solid working relationships to facilitate accurate and complete coding
Skills
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of one (1) year coding experience, which includes recording and interpreting clinical data from medical records, is required
Upon placement into this position, a minimum of three (3) months of on-the-job training, including attendance at specific training sessions, is required
Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, medical record coding systems and discharge/transfer procedures
Knowledge of PC/CRT systems, encoding applications and mainframe applications
Ability to accurately abstract, code and interpret data from diverse sources
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in various forms (i.e., written, oral, diagram, schedule, etc.)
Strong oral and written communication skills
Ability to speak and write in English is required
Ability to speak and write in both English and Arabic is preferred
Health care industry experience is preferred
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Associate’s degree in Health Information Technology, or related field, from an accredited two-year college or technical school or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, or related field, from a four-year university is required
Certifications are preferred (i.e., RHIT - Registered Health Information Technologist, RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator or Certified Coding Specialist Credential)
