experts in some 160 countries.

The IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Program operates in twenty four countries across the Horn of Africa, eastern and southern Africa and the Western Indian Ocean.

The focus of this position is

twofold:

i)Located within the Regional Programme Coordination Unit, the Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Regional Programme Coordinator in the development and execution of ESAROs Intersessional Programme; and

ii) as the Head of Office for the South Africa Office, the Coordinator would assume responsibility for oversight of the day to day management and administration of the South Africa Office as well as play a role in supporting the Regional Director in representation of IUCN, with a specific focus on Southern Africa countries within the ESARO region.

Specific Duties

Programme Coordination

Supporting the Regional Programme Coordinator (RPC) in the development and execution of ESAROs

Intersessional Programme through:

  •     Supporting the strategic design of the Intersessional Programme and Annual Workplans;
  •     Working with Regional Technical Coordinators to support them in the strategic management of their respective thematic areas ;
  •     Working with the RPC to establish and implement the ESARO Programmatic Monitoring and Evaluation systems and processes;
  •     Developing tools and guidelines necessary for the effective management and implementation of the Programme, as requested by the RPC;
  •     Developing annual and other periodic reports on the overall progress, performance and lessons and experiences from the ESARO Programme; and
  •     Working with the RPC to continuously build the capacity of the ESARO Technical Programme Group as well as members of the IUCN Constituency in the region in various aspects of Project Cycle Management, including the use of Monitoring and Evaluation for adaptive management purposes Head of Office
  •     Maintain a high and professional corporate profile for IUCN within the southern Africa countries of the IUCN ESARO Region;
  •     Support the Regional Director in identifying, establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships with IUCN members and other strategic partners within southern Africa (including Governments; Regional Bodies; Donors/Development partners; and Non-State Actors);
  •     Support both the Regional Director and RPC in identifying and securing new funding opportunities for the Programme in the region;
  •     Support the Regional Director in supporting IUCN Members in South Africa, including the facilitation of membership meetings as and when necessary;
  •     Working closely with the ESARO Head of Finance monitor the financial health of the country office and ensuring that it is financially viable over time;
  •     Working closely with the ESARO Head of Human Resources provide leadership and oversight to staff in the Pretoria Office in line with IUCNs policies and procedures.
  •     Approval of office expenditures (as per delegated authority) and support in financial management; and
  •     Overall management of office premises, equipment and IUCN

Competencies

  •     At least 10+ years of experience in programme management, including the facilitation and development of strategic and operational plans, including monitoring, evaluation and learning processes;
  •     Demonstrated experience in facilitating multi-stakeholder processes at programmatic and regional levels;
  •     Proven high level knowledge of the region, with a specific focus on environmental and natural resource management issues and trends;
  •     Strong interpersonal, management and supervisory skills experience with at least 5 years of experience at the managerial level and demonstrated experience at the international level an advantage;
  •     Proven experience in working with a team of multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary professionals.
  •     Superior analytical and writing skills.
  •     Strong organizational and team-building skills.
  •     English as a working language is essential, a good understanding of other IUCN languages
  •     (French and/or Spanish) and other African languages is an asset.
  •     Willing to travel frequently within the region and internationally
