The HPS facilitator will provide technical assistance, capacity building and mentoring to District Integrated School Health Programme (ISHP) task teams and Primary Health Care (PHC) Outreach teams, supporting 50 priority schools in selected districts to strengthen and maintain Health Promoting Schools.

Key Accountabilities

    Strengthen models of Health Promoting Schools (HPS)

Provide technical support, capacity building and mentoring to District ISHP task teams (School Health Co-coordinators from the Department of Education, DBE, Department of Health, DOH and Department of Social Development, DSD), Health Promoters (or equivalent) and PHC Outreach teams to strengthen models of Health Promoting Schools (50 secondary schools) based on the standard HPS model and monitoring tools provided by the Health Promotion Directorate at National Department of Health. Enable the District ISHP task teams and PHC Outreach teams to engage teachers and school management and SGBs, SBST and SBST Health Committees, Children’s Committees and other relevant Stakeholders e.g. Department Agriculture, South African Police Service etc. in a drive to revive and strengthen or establish schools as Health Promoting Schools.

    Document and share best practice

Establish a steering committee for National Network of HPS and conduct annual meetings of the National HPS Network Utilise best practice from other relevant Save the Children programmes such as the Caring Schools Network, to engage Civil Society Organisations working through schools and strengthening HPS.

    Monitoring and evaluation
Provide support to the District M+E officer regarding input to monitoring and evaluation of the strengthening HPS strategy.

Person Specification

Essential
•Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant Health related field e.g. Health Promotion.
 •At least 4 to 5 years work experience in the Health Sector, Government or a Non-profit organisation with an emphasis on Child Health and Health Promotion.
 •Experience of adult training and mentoring.
 •Proven ability to work in a multi-cultural, field environment, with stakeholders ranging from children and young people, to parents, School Governing Bodies, Government agencies and the wider community. •Highly developed communication skills in working directly with children, both written and verbal English and at least one local language.
•Basic competence in MS Office.
 •Able to work effectively with minimal supervision and to demonstrate high levels of initiative.
 •Valid South African Driver’s license with at least 2 year’s experience of driving on a regular basis.

Desirable

 •Familiarity or conversance with the following South African National initiatives:
•Re-engineering of Primary Health Care
 •The Care and Support of Teaching and Learning framework (CSTL)
 •Integrated School Health Programme (ISHP)
•The Health Promoting Schools (HPS) initiative
•Knowledge of the Education and OVC sectors, and work experience in this field would be an advantage. •Basic Knowledge of child rights programming, child participation techniques and child protection policy and practice.
 •Intermediate competence in MS Office including at least Word and Excel.
 •Other local language(s).
