Save the Children South Africa is seeking a mature, highly experienced individual to fulfil the role of Programme Director, the purpose of which is to ensure the programme is of excellent technical quality, attracts significant donor & supporter funding and contributes significantly to national/global learning, advocacy and programme development.

Key accountabilities

  •     Lead the development and revision of the programmatic aspect of the country strategic plan ensuring sound technical analysis in the thematic areas of work, and contribute to the overall strategic plan for the organisation
  •     Ensure the implementation of the country strategic plan with Programme Managers, and other stakeholders.
  •     Manage the overall budget for programme technical inputs in compliance with Save the Children and donor stipulations for grants management.
  •     Lead in development of technical content of project proposals based on comprehensive and sound technical analysis of the local child rights situation
  •     Lead the activity of technical staff to ensure provision of adequate, synergistic and high quality technical support
  •     Lead in developing and institutionalising robust monitoring & evaluation, child rights situational analysis, baselines, operational research and evaluation systems
  •     Oversee and coordinate the technical review of Save the Children periodic reports, donor reports and technical papers to ensure the highest possible quality
  •     Oversee and coordinate the development, review, dissemination and implementation of technical & implementation policies and guidelines for effective programming,
  •     Represent the principles and work of Save the Children to donors, government, professional networks, UN, local NGOs, INGOs and media as may be required.
  •     Actively participate in Senior Leadership Meetings effectively contributing to timely and quality strategic decisions for country office.

Minimum Requirements
  •     Masters in Development Studies or Social Sciences or relevant thematic discipline or equivalent experience.
  •     At least 10 years INGO experience in programme development and implementation at a full time in-country context including at least 6 at a senior management level.
  •     Superior thematic strategy, project proposal, reporting and technical paper writing skills.
  •     A superior track record of delivery of multi-year, multi-site programmes with significant budgets
  •     Conversant with current thematic issues and debates in the Southern Africa region.
