Background / General description

IFC's African Telecom, Media and Technology (TMT) group invests in private sector businesses in various TMT sub-sectors across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We have a track record of successful investments in mobile telephony companies, submarine cables, V-sat operators, broadband networks, independent tower companies, data centers, IT enabled services and e-payments companies. We provide debt financing, growth equity and venture capital for TMT companies in SSA. We are unique for our regional and global prospective on the TMT space, our long-term approach to investments, our ability to leverage the resources of the entire World Bank Group, as well as our commitment to maximizing the value of our portfolio companies through sustained assistance. To expand our investments in SSA, IFC seeks an experienced investment professional. The position is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Duties and Accountabilities


  • The responsibilities of the Senior Investment Officer include but are not limited to:
  •     Promote IFC's investments in the TMT sector in SSA.
  •     Build a strong pipeline of potential investment opportunities.
  •     Develop innovative and appropriate financial structures for complex transactions. Appraise and negotiate transactions.
  •     Lead and manage project teams, mentor and develop junior staff.
  •     Build and maintain a network of local, regional and international co-investors and co-lenders to develop specific investment opportunities and to provide funding alongside IFC.
  •     Establish and maintain relationships with TMT industry players in SSA.
  •     Manage IFC’s investment in select portfolio companies.
  •     Collaborate in developing strategies for various TMT sub-sectors.
  •     Develop new initiatives for investments in the TMT sector in SSA. Identify how to use the Work Bank Group's expertise and assets to accelerate development of the sector.
  •     Work closely with IFC's SSA regional departments to contribute to the regional and sector strategy, and to deliver IFC's investment targets and development impact

Selection Criteria

  •     MBA or equivalent qualification
  •     10+ years of investment experience with a proven track-record of sourcing, structuring and closing deals. TMT investment experience preferred.
  •     SSA investment experience preferred. .
  •     Sound business judgment in identifying potential business partners.
  •     Strong financial and credit skills; demonstrated ability to structure a variety of complex financial instruments (debt and equity).
  •     Ability to interact directly and independently with the senior management of potential clients, technical partners and senior government officials.
  •     Existing network amongst SSA focused private equity funds, commercial and investment banks, investment advisors and strategic investors preferred.
  •     Successful candidates have the proven ability to work in a multi-country team, to actively drive multiple projects and to mentor junior staff.
  •     Genuine commitment to sustainable development
  •     Willingness to travel extensively.
  •     Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; fluency in French is a plus.
