The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) was founded in Cape Town, South Africa in 2003 as a pan-African center for post-graduate training, outreach and research providing advanced, broadly applicable mathematical skills to talented students recruited from all over Africa. Since 2003, AIMS-Senegal opened its doors in August 2011, and AIMS-Ghana in August 2012.
The Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI, www.nexteinstein.org ) is a core program of AIMS and specifically involves the establishment and operation of a network of fifteen centres of excellence across Africa, all focusing on the teaching of mathematical sciences to African university graduates. The centres are coordinated through the AIMS-NEI Secretariat, based in Cape Town, South Africa.
An experienced consultant is sought to conduct an in-depth review and assessment of network wide programs, operations and capacity, with a goal of developing a specific and targeted gender equity strategy that will immediately begin to increase the network's ability to engage more females within the field of mathematical sciences.

This : The firconsultancy is divided into four phases:
    Desk reviewst phase will consist of reviewing overall organizational documents with a gender lens and undertaking a complete gender analysis of key program documents. Research and review of best practices and lessons learned across the scientific and academic community would also be undertaken.
    Network program planning: The second phase will include participation in a Program Implementation Planning workshop to be held in Cape Town from February 4-8 to ensure ge
    Gender strategy and policy development: nder is mainstreamed in program activities, gender indicators are included in the Monitoring and Evaluation framework, and relevant costs are taken into consideration in the program budget.
    Gender audit: The third phase is to undertake a full gender audit of the network, including visit to at least one AIMS centre, to conduct interviews and discussions with key stakeholders.Based on the first three phases, the Consultant will work with the Secretariat and centers to develop a gender strategy, policy framework, and implementation plan, including capacity building activities at the Secretariat and centre level.
    Review of strategy implementation: after a period of 6 months  1 year, conduct a review of progress to date and provide recommendations for modifications to the strategy.

DESCRIPTION OF DELIVERABLES
Working closely with Centre and Secretariat staff, the Gender Consultant will ensure the following deliverables:
    Desk review report and enhanced program documents
    Network Program planning meeting:
    Gender audit
    Gender strategy development and policy framework
    A plan for the Monitoring and evaluation of the strategy
    A 6-month review and assessment
    Contract Duration

This assignment is expected to take approximately 80-100 days over a period of one year.
Competence:
·         The Consultant could be based out of   Demonstrate excellent and effective written skills;
·             Ability to manage multiple tasks, set deadlines and plan work independently;
·             Set clear priorities and be able to meet key deadlines under pressure;
·             Ability to synthesize and summarize complex information;
·             Be a team player; and
·             Display cultural, gender and political sensitivity in the workplace.
·          a home office, or could be provided office space at an AIMS centre.

SKILLS:
·             Excellent knowledge of gender issues as they relate to education and science;
·             Experience in conducting gender analyses and in mainstreaming gender into donor policies, programs and processes;
·             Demonstrated knowledge of the academic sector;
·             Experience drafting reports, presentations, and other products is an asset

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    Master's degree in gender, development, education, or related field required;
    At least 5 years of experience in education, development, gender or other relevant field;
    Fluent in English; knowledge of French will be considered an asset.
