The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) was
founded in Cape Town, South
Africa in 2003 as a pan-African center for post-graduate
training, outreach and research providing advanced, broadly applicable
mathematical skills to talented students recruited from all over Africa. Since 2003, AIMS-Senegal opened its doors in
August 2011 and AIMS-Ghana in August 2012. The Next Einstein Initiative
(AIMS-NEI, www.nexteinstein.org) is a core program of AIMS and specifically
involves the establishment and operation of a network of fifteen centres of
excellence across Africa, all focusing on the
teaching of mathematical sciences to African university graduates. The centres
are coordinated through the AIMS-NEI Secretariat, based in Cape Town, South Africa.
An experienced consultant is sought to conduct an in-depth
review and assessment of network wide programs, operations and capacity, with a
goal of developing a specific and targeted gender equity strategy that will
immediately begin to increase the network's ability to engage more females
within the field of mathematical sciences.
This consultancy is
divided into four phases:
Desk review:
·
The first phase will consist of reviewing
overall organizational documents with a gender lens and undertaking a complete

and lessons learned across the scientific and academic community would also be
undertaken.
·
Network program planning: The second phase will
include participation in a Program Implementation Planning workshop to be held
in Cape Town
from February 4-8 to ensure gender is mainstreamed in program activities,
gender indicators are included in the Monitoring and Evaluation framework, and
relevant costs are taken into consideration in the program budget.
·
Gender audit: The third phase is to undertake a
full gender audit of the network, including visit to at least one AIMS centre,
to conduct interviews and discussions with key stakeholders.
·
Gender strategy and policy development: Based on
the first three phases, the Consultant will work with the Secretariat and
centers to develop a gender strategy, policy framework, and implementation
plan, including capacity building activities at the Secretariat and centre
level.
